2022 has been an amazing year in Britain. As we turn our attention to 2023, here’s a look at some of the key events and ways to keep exploring Britain.
Royal Heritage: A summer of exciting events throughout Britain will kick off with the official Coronation of King Charles III on May 6th. Visitors can immerse themselves in the lives of the Royal Family, with tours and unique exhibitions at Windsor Castle, Kensington Palace, Hampton Court Palace and Buckingham Palace. Not to be missed is the chance to see the Coronation Regalia at the Tower of London, including the Imperial State Crown, worn by monarchs after their Coronation.
Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool: It’s time for extravagance, glitz and all-out party as Liverpool gets ready to be centre stage for Eurovision’s 67th Song Contest on May 13th. The Liverpool Arena, on the banks of the River Mersey in the heart of the UNESCO City of Music, is now poised to welcome talent from across the continent, and beyond.
On Stage: For theatrical entertainment, visitors can look to Soho Place in London – the West End’s first new venue for more than 50 years. Or they can bag tickets for Dirty Dancing and Guys and Dolls, which return to the stage at the Dominion Theatre and The Bridge Theatre, respectively. For all things cultural head to Manchester’s Factory International – the arts centre is set to burst into life in 2023, bringing contemporary exhibitions, creative workshops and the return of the Manchester International Festival.
Shakepeare Triangle: All the world’s a stage, but England’s new Shakespeare Triangle should be the next destination for fans of the Bard. In London, see a performance at the Globe Theatre or catch a West End show. In Stratford-upon-Avon, tour the famous playwright’s home, and grab a Shakespeare’s England Explorer Pass to see more of Warwickshire’s top attractions. Complete the tour at the Shakepeare North Playhouse, a brand-new theatre and visitor centre continuing the legacy of Prescot’s 16th-century playhouse, one of the northernmost homes of Shakespeare’s plays while he was alive.
Culture in Manchester: England’s Northern gateway is all about reinvention, and the city’s transformation is at full speed heading into 2023. Manchester Museum reopens in February following a £13.5 million renovation. Factory International is an ultra-flexible cultural space opening in spring 2023; it will be the future permanent home of the Manchester International Festival, in addition to holding other events and enabling large-scale artistic innovation unlike any other space in the world.
Affordable Britain: Boasting more free museums and exhibitions at museums across the nation and a wealth of free experiences, events, festivals, there is so much to choose from for an affordable break in Britain. Stay in boutique hotels, revamped and stylish hostels, campsites and glamping pods, Airbnb and homestays.
Wales Coast Path: Having just celebrated 10 years of the Wales Coast Path, there’s no time like the present to get out and discover its 870 miles (1,400 km) of soaring shorelines, diverse nature and cultural hubs. Along the way, visitors could take the opportunity to climb aboard a traditional schooner and uncover Wales’ maritime heritage at the new Wales International Coastal Centre – opening in 2023.
England Coast Path: Once it fully launches in 2023, the England Coast will be the longest continuous coastal path in the world, covering 2,795 miles (4,500 km). From riding the waves along the north west, to tucking into delectable Dorset crab along the Jurassic Coast – there’s plenty of fresh experiences along England’s shores.
Discover Scotland’s UNESCO Trail: Scotland is the first country in the world to bring together 13 UNESCO sites into one trail. Dive into Scotland’s vibrant culture in its three creative cities – Edinburgh: City of Literature, Glasgow: City of Music, and Dundee: City of Design – or explore 6,000 years of archaeology across the Shetland Islands and the Neolithic monuments in Orkney.
See Britain Sustainably: More and more travellers and tourism businesses are considering their environmental and social impact, and Britain offers a wide range of attractions for visitors looking to travel more sustainability. From eco-friendly accommodation to dark sky reserves, locally sourced and vegan-friendly cuisine, to epic train journeys and cycling routes, visitors will find everything they need to enjoy a responsible stay in Britain.
Favourite Events: We also look forward to a full calendar of Britain’s iconic annual events including the Chelsea Flower Show in May, the Wimbledon Tennis Championships in July, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and local Pride marches and celebrations throughout the summer, in cities all across Britain.
New Hotels: We anticipate an exciting line-up of hotel openings coming to Britain next year, offering new opportunities for visitors to treat themselves to an unforgettable overnight stay. Several luxury hotel brands will make their London debut next year with properties such as the St. Regis London, and 1 Hotel in Mayfair, The Peninsula London, and Raffles at the OWO, luxury residences built in the Old War Office in Whitehall. Check out the already-iconic W Hotel opening in Edinburgh in 2023, or book a stay at the charming Albion Aberteifi in Wales, or at Wildes, a new luxury boutique hotel in Chester.
These are some of the great things to do and visit in Great Britain. Another fantastic was to enjoy these great countries is by joining me on Seabourn’s 14 Nights Jewels of the National Trust, September 10-24, 2023. This will be a special cruise.
