There’s something special about visiting Puerto Vallarta in shoulder season—the sun is warm, the beaches are calm, and everything feels just a little more relaxed. This trip came with twists, luxury, local culture, and even a rap performance on a bus. Here’s the full story.
✈️ The WestJet Rollercoaster: Accepted Upgrades… Then Taken Away
This trip started with hope. Real hope.
My WestJet business class upgrade bids were accepted on BOTH flights, and for a brief, glorious period I thought I had scored the ultimate travel win.
Then came the plot twist.
Due to changes in aircraft type on both legs, WestJet rescinded the upgrades entirely. One minute I had lie-flat dreams, the next minute I had an apologetic email and regular seats again.
To make things even more fun, a schedule change meant diving into the WS refund process. It wasn’t instant—lots of patience and follow-ups were involved—but eventually things were resolved. Not the smoothest start, but at least the outcome landed in the “acceptable” zone.
🏨 Casa Velas: An Adults-Only Sanctuary
Casa Velas quickly erased any lingering flight frustrations. This boutique, adults-only all-inclusive is the definition of calm, comfort, and hospitality.
What Made Casa Velas Amazing:
- Peaceful, adults-only setting — quiet, serene, never crowded
- Attentive, personalized service — the staff genuinely elevate your stay
- Beautiful private Beach Club — fantastic food & oceanfront relaxation
- Immaculate property — spotless everywhere
- Spacious rooms — some with private plunge pools
- Great value — luxury without the luxury price tag
Some rooms have slightly dated décor, but the comfort and service make it easy to overlook.

🎤 A Rap Concert… on a Local Bus
One of the most memorable—and delightfully unexpected—moments happened on the way back from the La Cruz Sunday Market. Rather than calling for Uber or DiDi, I hopped on a local bus to Puerto Vallarta.
Partway through the ride, a young rapper boarded with a portable speaker and launched into a full performance.
It was spontaneous, energetic, and hilarious—and the entire bus loved it.
A truly authentic slice of Mexican daily life you just can’t plan.
🚕 Getting Around
Transportation in Puerto Vallarta is easy and flexible:
- Uber
- DiDi
- inDrive
- Local taxis
- Local buses — cheap, colourful, and an experience of their own
Shoulder season means fewer crowds, making everything faster and easier.
💻 Working Remotely: Smooth & Simple
Even with paradise calling, work still had to happen. Luckily, Rogers WiFi calling was reliable throughout the resort and handled calls and emails without issue. Perfect for remote work—especially when you can jump back into the pool after.
💖 Giving Back
Supporting local businesses, tipping generously, and contributing to community-led initiatives felt meaningful and appreciated. PV thrives on its people—and giving back is part of the experience.
Final Thoughts
This shoulder-season trip to Puerto Vallarta had everything: airline plot twists, unexpected performances, beautiful markets, and a blissfully calm stay at Casa Velas. Despite the upgrade reversal saga, the overall experience was a wonderful blend of relaxation, culture, and local discovery.
And honestly? The rap performance on a local bus almost made up for losing business class.
