The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be a landmark edition of the tournament, featuring an expanded 48-team lineup and stretching across 39 days. For the first time, it will span an entire continent, jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Beginning on June 11, a total of 104 matches will be staged across 16 host cities, ranging from the cooler climate of Vancouver to the warmer regions of Mexico. As fans begin planning potential trips for this historic event, here’s a look at some of the host cities and their deep football connections.
Toronto
Often referred to as “The Six,” Toronto is widely seen as the heart of Canadian football culture. It was the setting for Canada’s first World Cup qualifier match in 1957 and remains a major hub for the sport. The city’s diverse population fuels a passionate fan base, especially through support for Toronto FC, the country’s first club to compete in Major League Soccer.
Vancouver
Vancouver, the most northern host city, sits where ocean meets mountains, blending urban life with striking natural scenery. Known for its outdoor lifestyle, residents enjoy easy access to places like Stanley Park and Granville Island. The city’s culture is closely tied to nature, with changing seasons shaping everyday life.
Guadalajara
Guadalajara has a long sporting legacy, having previously hosted matches during the 1970 and 1986 World Cups, as well as events like the 1968 Olympics and 2011 Pan American Games. Beyond its history in sport, it is known for its traditional atmosphere, relaxed rhythm, and vibrant street life.
Mexico City
One of the largest metropolitan areas in the Western Hemisphere, Mexico City will host the tournament’s opening match at the iconic Estadio Azteca, located at high altitude. This legendary stadium, with a capacity of around 87,500, has witnessed historic World Cup moments, including triumphs by Pelé in 1970 and Diego Maradona in 1986.
Monterrey
Monterrey, a major northern Mexican city, is deeply rooted in football culture and fierce club rivalries, particularly between C.F. Monterrey and Tigres UANL. Matches held at the modern Estadio BBVA are expected to deliver an intense and energetic atmosphere driven by passionate local supporters.
